THE OVERWORKED AMERICAN

Juliet B. Schor a professor at Harvard University, had writen the book THE OVERWORKED AMERICAN in 1991. Fifteen years later when american jobs have shifted to india, we are reading the same kind of articles in the newspapers in India.

"
What if our desires keep pace with our incomes, so that getting richer doesn't make us more satisfied? Or what if satisfaction depends, not on absolute levels of consumption, but on one's level relative to others (such as the Joneses). Then no matter how much you possess, you won't feel well off if Jones next door possesses more ?"

" Of course, there's more going on here than lack of time. Child neglect, marital distress, sleep deprivation, and stress-related illnesses all have other causes. But the growth of work has exacerbated each of these social ailments. Only by understanding why we work as much as we do, and how the demands of work affect family life, can we hope to solve these problems. . .
…By understanding how we came to be caught up in the cycle of work-and-spend, perhaps we can regain a reasonable balance between work and leisure."

The fuse can go off anytime.

I went to a nearby hospital yesterday with a friend.
There was an emergency case and the patient lying in
the adjecent bed was declared dead.

I realized that i have been ignoring a fact that the
fuse within can go anytime. :-) Then i remembered the
sentence "We live as if we would never die and we die as if
we have never lived".

I don't always live with the realization that the flame within can
go off anytime. At times i live in a dream of the future continually
repeated. I find myself, in other words Just not able to live
in the current moment with my will to experience the ever new
experience. I find myself immobilized. This immobility in my will
to experienxe the present moment is the root cause of my
anxiety : expectation of the future based on my present experience,
instead of calmly waiting for the future experience whenever it
appears. We should see this absurdity not as a condemnation ,
but to affirm and realize the necessity for a change, a change that
cannot be ‘achieved’ but can only happen with the deepest understanding.
We canot find a solution for a problem ; the problem itself must
dissolve when it is squarly faced.

We have to be able to live in the now, in the present moment.
The very basis of the fear is the future , and the future only
exists in the mind. And the mind can only project for the future,
its own needs and desires : its own fears. When the mind is being
able to remain in the now there is no projection of fear in the
future that does not exist now.

And yet this realization is so short lived. It seems natural to
forget this and get back to our old ways.

Swami Rama narrates an incident in the book "Living with the
himalayan masters" when he was returning to his ashram without
completing his sadhna which his guru had asked him to do.
In his way back he passes through a house of a prostitute. He
hears a song which goes something like this..."live the
life before the oil in the lamp dries away", he gets inspired
with those words and returns back and completes his sadhana
and experiences the fruits of the pennance. Later,he goes to the
prostitute, who refuses to meet her initially out of
reverance, and thanks her for those words of inspiration. Later
that lady also attains sainthood and gives up her body in Haridwar.

I felt the need to live with the realization that the fuse can
go off anytime and live joyfully till the oil in the lamp dries away. :-)

You dont have what you need always

My grandmother is 88 years old now. She is relatively fit but unable to walk without support now. During my tele-conversations with her she expresses her helplessness and abhores her dependence on her sons with exasperation.

That's the advange of living with a family. You get to live with old people. As a youngster, you observe them toil hard with great vigour and enthusiasm. You grow up observing the confluence of various emotions in their psycosoma. Its interesting to observe people around you who have exemplified honor, dignity and also demonstrated great skill in imposing their views on others, change so drastically as they grow old.

Everyone is forced to let go their ego and accept their dependence on others. From childhood you grow to become a child again. You dont seed fame , money , recognition at that age. You need
good health and you dont have it.

Relationships Matter

We human beings are social beings. We come in the
world as the result of others action. We survive here
on dependence on others. Wether we like it or not ,
there is hardly a moment of our lives when we do not
benifit from others activities. For this reason , it is
hardly surprising that most of our happiness arises in
the context of our relationship with others.

There is no such thing as a self made man. We are made
up of thousands of others. Everyone who has done a
kind deed for us or spoken one word of encouragement
to us has entered into the makeup of our character and of
our thoughts, as well as our success.

Its so important to learn to contribute, to give your time ,
money and expertise to your growing community of friends.
It is so important to build a community of those you
love and who love you. Call it a clan , call it a tribe
, call it a network , call it a family , whatever you
call it, whoever you are , you need one.

The more people you help the more help you'll have and
the more help you'll have helping others. This is not
an era of cut throat competition as it is popularly
percieved but an era of collaboration and establishing
synergies. Today we need each other more than ever.

If our interactions are ruled by generosity , our
rewards will follow suit. Our relationships with
others is are our finest expressions of who we are and what
we have to offer. Nothing else compares.

A small answer to avoid philosophy

Last year a youngster asked me if there was a need for a God in our lives. He wanted to know if “God” was an imagination to counter the “fear” we harbour. It was a very valid question and i dint had a correct answer.

I said."Your question is very interesting and it has along history. Humans have understood to believe at some point in their evolution that there exist powers beyond their control or there exists some power controlling everything. The nature of their understanding has depended on the level of their evolution. They have prayed snakes, and powerful animals and their concept of god has changed from an evil entity that punishes us to something that is merciful and ever forgiving and loving. Our human civilization was travelled a long journey from being god fearing to god loving. We already see people talking about seeing the divinity in others.Based on the above premise "Fear" is no longer a basis for this belief. It seems that the reason behind this belief is our nature of scientific inquiry.

Its is our scientific temprament which encourages us to find answers ;answers about the origin of universe , about who we are where we came from and where do we go hereafter and so on. One could continue to ask simillar questions. We create problems to solve them. The worlds best brain continue to grapple with the question of conciousness. Those who claim to have found the answers to this question say that the basis for conciousness is something which we have learnt to define as God."

at the end to escape from any further argument i said...

"Your question can be answerd properly if we know your approach towards this question and the motivation behind it. One can justify and at the same time deny any need for the concept of god. But in either case it would be based on a specific context. It's needless to mention that you should not and will not belive just by reading something. And thats the reason i feel that this forum is not the right platform to restart this perrenial debate. Perhaps it cannot be answerd properly for it is you who has to decide what suites you after doing all your research on this topic."

I intentionally replaced "philosophy with "scientific inquiry". Scientific inquiry goes on to explain the "how's" which ultimately would lead to the why's" of things around us, which philosophy cater to directly. Urging him to find his own answer seemed teh safest approach. Even Swami Vivekanda in his first speech in Chicago said that “A hindu when confronted with this question says I don’t know”.

And as i tried to search for a better answer to his question in books i was amazed to discover that more questions on this line have been asked and more answers have been documented than i could concieve of. More experiences have been documented than what i could possibily experience in the next ten lives. More original concepts have been caught than i could grasp. As if, the answer to every question is already present and its for us to read them.

The amount of information available and the nature of information made me extreemly pensive. Every feeling that I felt and every thought that dawned to me has been experinced & documented before by millions before! There is more that I can experience or explore in this lifetime. Should I not then not sit quietely and keep reading and exploring throught the life instead of wasting my energies reacting to the external stimulus which results in a predictable and predefined set of outcomes ?

What I liked was that people had devoted their lives, crossed mountains & oceans and persisted in their search for years in search of answers.

We live life without even attempting to explore a little. We don’t have time. A watchman also says he does not have time. Lack of time gives a person sense of importance i think.

But if once explores a bit. There is no turning back. You first realize your prosaic existance. Going to office, come home, Eat, and Sleep, Movies, Money, loads of feelings to handle, innumerable desires to be fulfilled and emotions to tackle.

Yes, You are not alone, partner. This lifestyle has also been lived and documented before. Everything is predictable. Millions have lived like this. Yet we put a viel of pretence. Yet you
find it unable to relate with others. Simillar desires, simillar aspirations, simillar thought patterns and yet there exists a strong sense of individuality.

Yes there is no turning back. There has to be reason behind everything, or not ?
Nothing happens without a reason after all, isn't it ? Or does it?
There has to be a reason for what we experience and why we do it ?

-- If no then why are you subjected to experience what you do ?
-- Am you subjected to, or do you choose to ?
-- If you choose to, How much free will do you have ?
-- Why have you chosen to experience suffering ?
-- Do all the emotions you experience have a basis in something or are they constants in all living beings ?
-- If they are variables, can they be manipulated?
-- Should they be? And if yes, why?
-- And what is this "i" that you are talking about.
-- From where does this ego conciousness come from?
-- If the soul is the experiencer why does it loose its identity after entering the body?
-- From where does it come from and where does it go? Why does it go?
-- Is there any end to this experiencing phinominon?
-- Who is controlling this? Is ther any one who does it?

You see one question leads to another. Is there a need to find
the answers? Would you want to think on thse lines ? Do you have time to think about it ?

Here it comes. Back to ground zero you see. Had i asked these questions to that young lad he would definately declared me crazy. But thats the nature of this topic. Can't help it.

I hope till the time he starts exploring answers himself, my explanation of scientific temprament would keep him at peace with himself & with civilization around him.

Retreat With Swami Kriyananda

Swami Kriyananda is the direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda and is the author of 83 books , including "conversations with Yogananda". He has also composed and released several fantastic music albums.

You can see his face glowing with inner radiance , vitality and happiness. I had the priviledge of meeting him in person during the four day retreat at Gurgaon from 2nd till 5th March 2006 where he unofficially released his latest book The Essence of the Bhagwat Gita, Explained by ParamhansaYogananda , As remembered by his disciple , Swami Kriyananda.Wisdom flowed from every sentence he spoke.

Ananda ( www.anandaindia.org) is a self sustaining community of families who live a god centric life. They live together in peace, harmony , devotion and love for a common higher ideal. The Aanada Center in the US spans more than 100 acres. ( www.ananda.org).

Swami Kriyananda and all the advance deciples are trying to procure 120 acres of land around Gurgaon and establish another Ananda village in India for Indians, where people could live a god centric life while fulfilling their worldy duties. How often do we see a person at the age of 80 think of starting a mission like that ? But I know that it will happen at Ananda. Faith moves mountains. Yoganandaji said that our environment is stronger that our will power. And Kriyandaji is steadfastly following his gurus desire of creating worldwide spiritual communities.

During the Retreat Kriyanandaji shared the wisdom of Shrimad Bhagwat and talked beautifully about his memoirs with yoganandaji. The event was fantastic. It was evident how sweet life could be when it is lived rightly. People from Europe, US , Canada and even from Taiwan had come down to bask in the spiritual retreat. What amazed me was that very young occidentals had completely immersed themselves in chanting bhajans, Sanskrit shlokas and songs. There were Doctors, Vice presidents, entrepreneurs and students and people from all walks of life. I was asking each one of them..."and why did you come here ? Tell me more about yourself ?". All of them shared their wisdom and experiences openly. Oh ! I could connect with them so easily. It doesn't happen so naturally in the world. People would be judging you always. I realized that there is no end to the "something else" that humans seek. Some of them were really rich. The best part of the event was that it was very musical. Most of the songs were written and composed by Swamiji himself.

Some men call it progress

Down with those who doubt !-
To join the causes others join,
And shout when others shout.

Come, you're a man, no passive stone !
Stand up, and call your soul your own!
Go on alone, go on alone !
Banish weakness;go on alone!
Go on alone, go on alone !
Don't look back : Just go on alone !

Some men lack the daring
Ever to be free.
They shun the heights, and cloud the depths,
And court security.

Cowards see but pride in
Singularity:
Oh,never mind if men are wrong;
So long as they agree !

Clam the power within you
Error to defy :
The world may change or disappear,
But truth can never die!

Ananda mamabers were contended, happy and at peace with themselves and their creator.
During lunch I got the chance to speak to him.
There was nothing to tell or ask and i was out of words. To break the ice i said "Swamiji this path seems so tough. The world seems to suck us back into itself ( like a vacuum cleaner :-) ). We keep worrying about trivial things and our love for money makes us forget the purpose of human existence as we go along. He was spontanious in his answer, and said "The misery in the world is not easy either. This is a easy path that way".

True . There is so little outwardly that one , as a yogi , can legitimately enjoy. If one seeks happiness in worldly objects, ones get bound to them. People marry and their love stories start taking unusual twists and turns :-) . Its all part of the game. Can't expect others to make you happy. Others are struggling themselves managing their mind and their affairs. Sorrow and boredom has its own relevance. Without it a person would never start seeking ; and if the world was full of happiness man would get bored of it soon. Perhaps boredom is not a issue with youngsters nowdays, they have over occupied themselves with so many activities that there
is little time left for their own Self.

Nightingale ! Nightingale !
Sing of joy through the night.
Teach my heart
To impart
Everywhere your delight.
Sing of moonrays on the rain,
Sing that love's not in vain:
Every grief, everywrong
Has its ending in a song.

Nightingale ! Nightingale !
Sing of joy through the night.
Teach all men
Ho wto spin
Clouds of gloom into light
Without silence, what is song ?
Without night, where is dawn ?
Where is not for men's woes,
Who woudl smile at a rose ?

Nightingale ! Nightingale !
Sing of joy through the night.
Let each tone ,
Silence-grown ,
Earth and heaven unite.
Morning laughter, evening tears,
Snow and blossoms - all fade!
Joy must sing in the night
To face change unafraid.

Swamiji continued "...Ours is a Rajasic universe and it is indeed tough to maintain the sattvic tendencies...The times are tough...But you must practice your spiritual duties". In "Conversations with Yogananda", Yoganandaji explains that there are entire galaxies where tamas prevails. Living beings there cannot perceive anything beyond brute force and carnal pleasures are perceived as the best experiences that life has to offer. In the rajasic universe , humans focus on Self development and Self aggrandizement and in the sattvic universe humans are in complete harmony with the nature and with each other.

But there is hope for the seeker. In "Conversations with yogananda" Yoganandaji says, "If you fail( in your spiritual duties) , get up and try again. God will never let you down if you don't let him down".

The meditation sessions were conducted throughout the day. I would open my eyes , look around, and then try to calm my restless mind again. The senior deciples could sit motionless for hours ! Roma told me that they have been meditating regullarly since the past twenty five years ! They had joined Ananda in their twentees and since then have never looked back. I could feel that they have lived a very fulfilling life. Here's another song written by Kriyanandaji.

Walk like a man, even though you walk alone.
Why court approval, once the road is known ?
Let come who will, but if they turn home ,
The goal still awaits you : Go on alone !

Follow your dream though it leads to worlds unknown.
Life's but a shadow , once your dreams have flown .
What if men cry, "Your dream is not your own"?
Your soul knows the answer : Go on alone !

Give life your heart ! Bless everything that's grown;
Fear not the loving : all this world's your own.
Make rich the soil , but once the seed is sown
Seek freedom , don't linger : Go on alone !

(You can buy the music CD's by writing to www.anandaindia.org.)

All the saints save been saying the same thing. From Kabir das to Saint fransis of Assisi, from Gyaneswar to Shri Ramakrishna, from Shri Shankaracharya to Paramhansa Yogananda. From Ramana Maharshi to Gajananmaharaj. We have always had their support
and will always have it in the future , provided we choose to listen and follow.

Socialism : By the people , for the people

Ours is a very interesting country. The govt of india has decided to appoint a special judge
to track the conduct of the judges in the supreme court. In the next few years we will have
another judge to monitor that judge. The process of legislative and administrative reforms is interesting as well. The Govt keeps forming commetties. The committies submits reports. Most proposals of Administrative reforms simply add another layer of suprintendence to existing institutions without seriously finding out ways to enhanse the accountability of the institutions. Now it has happend to the supreme court.

The second news that keeps flashing nowdays is about the disinvestment of PSU's and the constant opposition of left parties over the disinvestment ideology.

Former reserve bank governor Bimal jalan in his latest book "The future of India"
summarizes the situation well :

"The public sector units which were supposed to generate revenue for the public continued
to suck public money even after 50 years of independence. It is interesting to note that the
central governments total internal public debt reached a stupendous 5,00,000 crore by the mid -1990's and nearly one third of it was accounted for by assets held in the public sector. Interest payments on public debt at that time amounted to nearly Rs. 40,000 crore , which were refinanced by new borrowings and represented nearly 70% of centres fiscal deficit. In effect, one third of the interest payments was on account of the govt's past investment in the public sector.By the end of 1990's, the centres internal debt almost doubled , to Rs. 9,70,000 crore. This sharp increse was partly accounted for by the need to higher and higher amounts to service that debt. If i remember the figures correctly the govt in the budget of 2005 again pledged to infuse 1000 crore to revive sick public units. The crucial issue is
wether the most economically efficient way of protecting the interest of the workers in these industries is through further govt borrowings for financing mounting losses and low returns on these units ?, or wether these intersts can be adequately protected through a more productive use of the capital ( including land ) which is locked up in thease units ? "

Ours is an interesting country because whichever govt does well looses elections. The Congress party came to power in 1991 and pulled the nation from the worst economic crisis and lost elections in 1996.The NDA govt which was voted out of power in 2004 had a good economic record. Economic considerations seem to be even less important at the state level. In two largest states, Bihar and uttar pradesh two largest parties with no credible records of economic performance or pro - poor policies have returned to power time and gaian.Chandrababu naidu on the other hand did a splendid work and lost election in 2005.

And the latest news says that congress govt is thinking of bringing a legislations to overrule the supreme courts decision to allow unaided porivate institutions to admit students without reservations. Too much isnt it ?. As a matter of policy the govt is deciding not to let live.
